Enhance Your New Home's Energy Efficiency

Building a new home? Have you considered insulating your house above and beyond code minimum standards? Whether you’re interested in building a house certified to PassivHaus standards or a true net‑zero energy home, insulation is a critical part of the equation. When it comes to insulation, it's not just quantity that counts, but also the quality of the installation.

At Lockport Insulation, energy efficiency is our passion. And when it comes to insulation, the devil is in the details. Whether we are hired to insulate a home to current code‑minimum standards or to super‑insulate a home as part of a net‑zero design, our goal is the same: to ensure that every step of the insulation and air/vapour barrier installation process is done with meticulous attention to detail. We take pride in a job well‑done and stand behind our workmanship.

By insulating your home above and beyond current energy codes you can significantly reduce your energy bills as well as your environmental footprint, while increasing the resale value of your home!

When insulating a new home, a careful, detail‑oriented application is an absolute must! That’s where the pros at Lockport Insulation come in. When you hire Lockport Insulation you are hiring a company with a passion for energy efficiency, careful attention to detail and years of experience in the industry!

Efficiency MB has multiple programs to help offset the cost of super‑insulating your new home. Find out how you can benefit from these programs on our Rebates page.

Common Issues in New Home Insulation Applications

Insufficient Attic Insulation

This is the top problem we see with new home insulation. Most of the time - due to liability issues - inspectors don’t inspect attic insulation. This has made for a 'Wild West' sort of situation when it comes to attics. In an effort to pad their profits, some insulation contractors install less than the code minimum R‑50. And by less, we mean MUCH less. We have personally measured insulation in numerous attics and the results have been shocking. We’ve found as little as 8" of cellulose (R‑27) in the attic of a 2‑year‑old home! Our advice: cheaper does not equal better. Choose an insulation contractor you can trust, and who is willing to verify installed insulation depth with photos and/or video.

Improperly Installed Batt Insulation

While it may look simple, it takes great care and attention to detail to install batt insulation to maximize energy savings. Ensuring a tight fit around plug boxes, light boxes, and wiring, verifying that batts completely fill each cavity, and making sure corners of batts are tight into the corners of cavities takes time and significant effort. Anyone can put a batt into a wall, but when it comes time to insulate your dream home, make sure you hire a team of insulation professionals dedicated to making your home perform at its best!

Poorly Sealed Air/Vapour Barrier

Every new home requires a combination air and vapour barrier. In 99.9% of cases, this is achieved using a 6 mil poly vapour barrier sealed at all joints and penetrations with acoustical sealant and/or tape. The level of attention to detail when it comes to sealing this air/vapour barrier can have a huge impact on the overall energy performance of a home. At Lockport Insulation we pride ourselves in our ability to create a super tight building envelope, keeping the warm air in and the cold air out.
