Frequently Asked Questions
How much does adding insulation cost?
This can vary depending on a few factors, such as: how much insulation is required; the condition of existing insulation; whether ventilation and air sealing need to be improved; the accessibility of the attic space; etc. The cost typically ranges from $2.00 to $4.00 per sq/ft, assuming existing insulation does not need to be removed.
How much insulation should I have in my attic?
Canada building code dictates a minimum of R‑50 in a home’s attic. This is equivalent to about 14 inches of loose-fill cellulose or 18 inches of loose-fill fibreglass. Efficiency MB now rebates up to R‑60, so many people are electing to add the extra insulation for even greater energy savings.
How much can Efficiency MB rebates cover?
Efficiency MB significantly increased their rebates in 2024! Using a fixed formula, we can calculate your rebate. For attics, this is currently $0.03 × sq footage × R‑value added (up to a total of R‑60). For example, if you have a 1200 sq ft home insulated to R‑10 (a pretty typical older home in Manitoba), you could be eligible for a rebate of $1800!
How long does it take to add attic insulation?
In most situations, an attic retrofit takes 1 to 2 days. Simple top-up jobs can be completed in as little as 1 to 2 hours.
How long is the ROI – or return on investment – on adding insulation?
In some cases, immediate! By financing your insulation project through MB Hydro's Home Energy Efficiency Loan, you can spread the cost of adding insulation out over 5 years. In this way, energy savings can sometimes outweigh your monthly loan payments, saving you money from day one! And, once the loan is paid off, the energy savings continue for the remainder of the time you own the home!
How do I know if my home needs more insulation?
Your home likely requires additional insulation and air sealing if you experience any or all of the following: high energy bills, drafty and uncomfortable living spaces, and uneven temperatures throughout your home.
Do you offer free estimates?
Yes! We would be happy to come out to take a look at your home, make an assessment of its current insulation, air sealing and ventilation, and give you a free quote on your upgrade!
Why are the heating bills in my new home so high?
Unfortunately, many new homes in Manitoba are insulated to levels far below what the Canada Building Code dictates (which is currently R‑50). We have found as little as R‑27 in a two‑year‑old Winnipeg home built by a major Winnipeg builder! If you feel like your newer home is not properly insulated, give us a call and we will assess your attic insulation for free.
Does adding attic insulation cause a lot of dust?
When we need to enter the attic through an attic hatch in the home, there is inevitably a small amount of dust that escapes the work area. However, we take great care to keep this to an absolute minimum. Once the job is done, we do a careful clean-up, ensuring that the home is left as close as possible to the way it was before we started the job.
Do I need to have my existing insulation removed before adding attic insulation?
Most of the time, as long as existing attic insulation is dry and free of mold and contaminants, it can stay in place and additional insulation can be blown overtop of it. If insulation is wet, moldy, contaminated by rodent feces or otherwise unsuitable to remain in the attic, it must first be removed before more insulation is added.
What’s better, fibreglass or cellulose?
In our opinion, cellulose is the superior product. It offers great thermal performance and fire resistance at a relatively low cost. It also repels rodents and insects, reduces convective heat loss, and it is environmentally friendly.
There's really only one question left to ask: What's in YOUR attic?
